Newsprint packing paper bound with the basketry technique called “coiling.” Traditionally this has meant a core material like straw, grass, or pine needles wrapped with a binding material like reed, raffia, or something else flexible and flat. I wanted to see if I could make paper serve both of these functions by bunching up paper strips into my core and folding, gluing, and flattening paper “reeds” for my binding. The result is a truly substantial piece that, I hope, speaks volumes about what we can achieve by applying knowledge and skills that we already have to materials now abundant around us. This paper will continue to deepen in color through exposure to light.
Kept out of direct sunlight, and out of reach of cats.
