Cotton and various papers are twined on a warp to create a fresh surface that looks like a thick, tight knit. The “warp” in this study is packing paper from my family’s move across the Atlantic, cut, folded, and spun into cord with a drill. The “weft” is a combination of tissue wrapping paper, grocery bags, and fabric strips from a quilt. Because the point of these material explorations is the material itself, I’ve left the ends wild instead of hiding them so you can truly see the twisted paper cord as it disappears into the weave, a sort of announcement that the piece and its ideas are in progress and open-ended. These “loose ends” contrast nicely with the regularity of the texture in the square. Because the paper holds its own weight so well, it makes me want to explore this method on a much larger scale.
