This study is characterized by a steady outward spiral of tiny stitches and speaks to my belief that often the only difference between waste and raw material is attention and time. Grocery bags were one of the first things that I harvested from my domestic environment (which is to say, pulled out of the recycling). I’ve left the tail of both paper and thread long to give the framed sample dimension and to “show my work”, so to speak. My hope is that this open-endedness invites the viewer to imagine picking up some paper and thread and giving the technique a try themselves. This technique is further explored in the basket sculpture “Worry Medicine,” also included in this collection.
