Notebook paper cord, waxed linen thread, black ink. The primary “what if?” question for this basket was wondering if the stiffness of paper would lend itself to stitching eyelets into my cord. I love the subtle shadows they throw and the lightness they give the piece. I had hoped the handwriting on the paper cord would come through more clearly, but I wrote in pencil during this notebook’s particular season, and my notes and lists faded into the off-white paper when I twisted the cord. Only one line in teal pen remains. I wanted something more visually impactful from the finished product. So I asked another question: would the paper still take ink? Why not? It does! The ink makes the basket look immersed in shadow (or in light, depending on which edge you hold). Learning by immersion—my favorite way to learn, whether in language or in craft.
