The result of this newspaper cord study is a woven oval with the remaining braid strands left long, inviting you to consider this familiar household waste in a new light and taking the form of a celestial sea creature. A paper halo or moon grounds the otherwise organic shape. This five-strand braid-in technique is most often used for braided rag rugs and gives this piece the characteristic spiralling “over-under” pattern. I can imagine using this technique to weave a much larger mat, potentially sealing it with wax or lacquer.
